Red-hot Spain face minnows Georgia in Cologne on Sunday in an intriguing last 16 clash at EURO 2024.
Spain - Georgia: Form Analysis
Spain have twice been crowned European champions. Their glory days came in 2008 and 2012 and sandwiched inbetween those triumphs, the Spaniards also won the 2010 World Cup.
Last year saw them win the UEFA Nations League and 12 months later, they look to be in with a good chance of again becoming European champions. Coming into this tournament, the Red One had only lost one of their last 15 matches.
That was a 1-0 loss to Colombia in a friendly in March of this year. After a thrilling 3-3 draw with Brazil (they led 2-0 and 3-2), they then put ten goals past Andorra and Northern Ireland in two Euro warm-up matches.
That put them in a good position ahead of Euro 2024. Hopes of a deep run were high. Their excellent form has continued in these European Championships with three wins to nil. They opened with a 3-0 win over Croatia and then defeated defending champions Italy and Albania, both 1-0.
Whereas Spain are used to winning tournaments, Georgia most certainly aren't. They only became members of FIFA in 1992 and this is the first time they have reached the finals.
There have been signs of progress in the UEFA Nations League. In the 2018/19 tournament they won promotion to League C. The most recent edition saw them top their group and they'll be in League B for the next tournament.
They missed out on automatic qualification for Euro 2024 by nine points, finishing fourth in the group. That included two games against Spain who beat them 3-1 at home and 7-1 in Georgia.
Their Euro Nations League success took them into the play-offs anyway where they beat Luxembourg and then Greece in a penalty shootout. In the group stages, Georgia lost 3-1 to Turkey but then drew 1-1 with the Czech Republic and beat Portugal 2-0 to qualify for the knockout stages.
Prediction: Spain 3-1 Georgia
