Bundesliga title holders Bayer Leverkusen will face RB Leipzig at the BayArena in their inaugural home match of the 2024-25 season.
After a historic season that saw Bayer Leverkusen secure an Invincibles title and a German Cup double—falling just short of a treble with a Europa League final loss—the team has continued their winning form into the new season. Leverkusen has triumphed in all three of their competitive matches so far, including a penalty shootout victory over Stuttgart in the DFB-Supercup and a thrilling 3-2 away win against Borussia Monchengladbach in their Bundesliga opener. Last weekend, Florian Wirtz scored a dramatic extra-time goal after initially missing a penalty.
Leverkusen also advanced to the second round of the DFB-Pokal with a 1-0 away win against Carl Zeiss Jena, thanks to a goal from Jonas Hofmann. Despite their success, head coach Xabi Alonso acknowledged that his team faced challenges against the lower-league side and needs to improve in certain areas.
RB Leipzig, after a 4-1 victory over Rot-Weiss Essen in the DFB-Pokal, won their Bundesliga opener 1-0 against VfL Bochum, with summer signing Antonio Nusa scoring shortly after coming on as a substitute. Despite a red card for Willi Orban late in the game, Leipzig managed to maintain their perfect start. Head coach Marco Rose is pleased with the results but sees room for improvement in all areas. Leipzig is now unbeaten in their last 12 Bundesliga games, equalling their longest unbeaten streak under Rose. However, they travel to the BayArena with a concerning record of conceding in their last 14 away Bundesliga matches and failing to keep a clean sheet in their last 20 away games in all competitions.
