Brazil aims for a consecutive win as they head to Asuncion for a 2026 World Cup qualifier against Paraguay.
Following Paraguay's loss to Brazil in the Copa America, Gustavo Alfaro left his position as Costa Rica's head coach to take over as Paraguay’s new manager. Alfaro’s debut saw a goalless draw against Uruguay on Friday, leaving Paraguay with six points and positioned in the inter-confederation playoff spot, just two points shy of automatic qualification.
With only one win from their first seven World Cup qualifiers, Paraguay faces a tough challenge against Brazil. Their only victory over Brazil in the past 16 years was a 2-0 home win in June 2008.
In the current qualifying cycle, Paraguay's home performances have been inconsistent: a draw with Peru, a win over Bolivia, and a loss to Colombia.
Brazil, meanwhile, may have defeated Paraguay in the 2024 Copa America, but their tournament overall was disappointing. The Selecao drew their other two group-stage games and were eliminated by Uruguay on penalties in the quarter-finals, marking their worst Copa America showing since their 2016 group-stage exit.
Under Dorival Junior, Brazil has now achieved four wins and five draws since his appointment at the start of the year. They will be optimistic about securing a second consecutive win on Tuesday, having won four of their last five matches against Paraguay in regulation time, including a decisive 4-1 victory in the 2024 Copa America group stage.
