Dynamo Kiev and Lazio will launch their Europa League campaigns at Hamburg's Volksparkstadion in their first league-phase match.

Dynamo Kiev enters this season's revamped Europa League after falling to Red Bull Salzburg in the Champions League qualifying playoffs, losing 3-1 on aggregate. They couldn't recover from a two-goal deficit, drawing 1-1 in Austria after losing the first leg, but their participation in the Europa League softens the disappointment. 

Having previously eliminated Partizan Belgrade and Rangers to reach this stage, Dynamo missed out on an automatic Champions League spot after finishing just two points behind champions Shakhtar Donetsk last season. They’ve begun their title defense strongly, winning five of six matches in the Ukrainian Premier League, and they remain undefeated at the top of the table. 

However, Dynamo has struggled in the old Europa League group stage, drawing five and losing six of their last 11 matches, with their last win nearly five years ago. They also have yet to defeat Lazio in four competitive encounters. Lazio has won both of their previous away matches against Dynamo, including a Champions League group stage match 25 years ago and a 2018 Europa League tie. 

This time, Lazio travels to Hamburg instead of Kyiv due to ongoing conflict in Ukraine. The Italian side comes into this match after a mixed start in Serie A, currently sitting eighth after five games. Following a 2-1 home victory over Hellas Verona, they aimed for another win against Fiorentina but left empty-handed after a late penalty overturned their early lead. Nevertheless, Lazio has scored in 13 consecutive matches since failing to find the net against Roma last April.
