Manchester City Women have the chance to secure a spot in the Women's Champions League quarter-finals as they head to Sweden to face Hammarby Women.
Hammarby have experienced a mixed debut in the Women’s Champions League group stage, winning one of their three matches and losing the other two.
The Swedish side started strong with a 2-0 home victory over St. Pölten but were dealt a heavy blow in a 9-0 defeat to European champions Barcelona. Despite last week’s 2-0 loss to Manchester City at the Joie Stadium, Hammarby delivered a spirited performance, holding their opponents at bay in the first half before conceding twice in the second.
Manchester City, meanwhile, are on course for the UWCL knockout stages, having collected maximum points from their three group games. Gareth Taylor’s team opened the group with a commanding 2-0 win over Barcelona and followed it up with a 3-2 comeback victory against St. Pölten in Austria.
Their latest win came against Hammarby last week, thanks to second-half goals from Laura Blindkilde Brown and Aoba Fujino. However, City’s 12-game unbeaten streak came to an end on Sunday, as they fell 2-0 to Chelsea in a key Women’s Super League match, leaving them second in the table, two points behind the leaders.
City will look to bounce back quickly, knowing that even a draw in Sweden will secure their place in the quarter-finals with two games to spare.
