The final first round of group games starts with this Group F opener as Turkey takes on the tournament's rank outsiders, Georgia.
Turkey will head into the Euro 2024 with lesser expectations than they did ahead of Euro 2020. Back then at the Euro 2020 they were disappointing as they lost all group games and finished bottom. This time round they are in a more open group and with not so high expectations, so the pressure is less. Starting off against tournament debutants gives them room to launch themselves well, as they head here as favorites, on paper. In the qualifiers, they finished top of a group that had Croatia, and that alone, was massive. However, in matches that have followed, they’ve struggled to live to the same billing, failing to win any of their last five games. The Turks have suddenly become goal-shy and there hasn’t been much improvement defensively. In their last five matches, Turkey didn’t manage more than a goal, and on two occasions failed to score.
Through the playoffs, Georgia got their ticket to a first ever major tournament. They aren’t favored a lot to advance from this group but they come here unbeaten in three games. The debutants have actually lost just once in their last seven matches – to Spain. The quality of the majority of their opponents is a whole other issue, even as they come here in better form than Turkey. To book their slot here, Georgia beat Luxembourg 2-0, and Greece through post-match penalties after a 0-0 draw. They had just one warm-up game ahead of this competition, beating Montenegro 3-1. At this stage, Georgia aren’t experienced at all, and with that they may not carry any pressure at all. Whether they have it in them to shock the bigwigs is to be seen but they don’t have a great run against the top footballing nations.
Prediction: Turkey 2-1 Georgia
