Peru will face Argentina at the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami on Saturday. Peru is on the brink of elimination and will need to do everything they can to stop the defending champions.
Argentina - Peru: Form Analysis
Win, draw or lose, Lionel Messi will lead his side to yet another knockout stage in what could be his final Copa America tournament.
Argentina secured their place in the next round with a 1-0 victory over a resilient Chile, who kept the match level at 0-0 until Lautaro Martinez found the all-important strike for his side two minutes before the final whistle.
La Albiceleste had already beaten Canada 2-0 in their first match, meaning they are yet to concede a goal in this year’s competition.
The last time the defending champions lost a match was to Uruguay in World Cup qualifying. That defeat also remains Argentina's only loss since their opening match of the FIFA World Cup in November 2022.
Peru faced this opponent in WC qualifying last October and suffered a 2-0 defeat on home soil.
That was the third successive loss that La Blanquirroja have endured at the hands of Argentina, while in 18 previous meetings, they have only beaten Messi and co once.
While Peru were unbeaten in their four warm-up matches ahead of Copa America, they are yet to win a match in the competition following an opening day goalless draw with Chile and a 1-0 loss to Canada on Wednesday.
Notably, Jorge Fossati’s side have failed to score in three of their last four games and are still in search of their first goal of the tournament.
Peru must win this match to have any hope of qualifying for the next round.
Argentina & Peru Squad Analysis
In the lead-up to this fixture, Argentina boss Lionel Scaloni confirmed that changes are to be expected in this match, as he intends to give players who have not featured as yet some game time.
That may suggest that Messi could be given a rest for this match after he was reported to have experienced discomfort in his hamstring after the match against Chile.
The likes of Exequiel Palacios, Lucas Quarta, and Manchester United attacker Alejandro Garnacho have not played at all in this competition but could make the starting 11 in this one.
Prediction: Argentina 2-0 Peru
