FCSB are poised to secure their passage to the next round of the Champions League qualifiers as they host Virtus at the National Arena.
Despite being heavily favored going into the first leg, Ilias Charalambous of Virtus showed respect to their opponents by fielding a strong lineup featuring key players from their previous league-winning campaign.
As expected, FCSB asserted their dominance early on, with Darius Olaru converting a penalty in the sixth minute and adding another goal just five minutes later. Olaru completed a first-half hat-trick by the 37th minute, complemented by Daniel Popa's brace, which saw FCSB comfortably leading 5-0 at halftime. Charalambous took advantage of the situation to make four halftime substitutions, including David Miculescu, who promptly scored twice in three minutes to secure FCSB's progression to the next round of qualifying.
The match resembled a training session at times, with FCSB maintaining an impressive 80% possession and attempting 22 shots on goal compared to Virtus' five, with only one shot on target.
Virtus, largely composed of amateur players balancing full-time jobs as sales agents, lifeguards, and bank clerks, faced a challenging evening. Despite this, 39-year-old Federico Piovaccari, who previously played for FCSB, and Manuel Battistini found moments of personal glory, with Battistini scoring a late consolation goal.
