Manchester City kick off their quest for an unprecedented fifth consecutive Premier League title , as they visit Stamford Bridge to take on Chelsea in their opening match of the 2024-25 season.

After finishing sixth last season and narrowly securing a spot in UEFA competition with a strong finish of five consecutive Premier League wins in May, Mauricio Pochettino was still let go from his position at Stamford Bridge. His departure was agreed upon mutually after just 10 months at the helm, making way for Enzo Maresca, Chelsea's fourth permanent manager since Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital took over in May 2022.

Maresca, who led Leicester City to the Championship title last season, takes over amid Chelsea's ongoing aggressive spending spree, having brought in 10 new players for over £150m. His pre-season tenure has been challenging, with Chelsea managing just one win in six friendlies, including losses to Manchester City and Real Madrid, and a draw with Inter Milan.

Maresca faces a tough start with Sunday’s Premier League opener against Manchester City. As a former assistant to Pep Guardiola, he will be up against a City side that is eager to continue its dominance, having won a record fourth consecutive title and sixth in seven seasons. City finished last season with 91 points and only three losses, and are targeting a seventh Premier League title in eight years under Guardiola, who is in his ninth and potentially final season at the Etihad.
