Germany can secure their place in the knockout phase of the European Championship when they take on Hungary at Stuttgart Arena on Wednesday evening.
Germany entered Euro 2024 as the third-favourite win the competition and have now shortened in price to qualify after an excellent first match. They took on Scotland on opening day and were far too good for the Tartan Army, scoring three goals in the first half alone. The Germans added a further two goals before the final whistle, giving them the biggest winning margin of the competition to date, with Scotland managing only a late consolation. That result has taken the National Eleven’s current unbeaten record to five matches in all competitions, including four wins. Owing to them being the hosts of the tournament, Germany were not involved in qualifying. However, they have played a total of ten international friendlies since September last year and scored two or more goals in eight of those matches. While Die Mannschaft have failed to beat Hungary in their last three attempts (W0 D2 L1), they are the clear favourites in this one.
Meanwhile, Hungary came into Euro 2024 as a potential dark horse off the back of an excellent qualifying campaign. During the qualifiers, they were drawn into Group G and won the group with an unbeaten record of five wins and three draws in their eight games. That record saw them end ahead of the likes of Serbia, Montenegro and Lithuania. However, they suffered a 3-1 defeat to Switzerland in their opening match of the competition, with Barnabas Varga scoring their only goal of the game. Still, that loss was only the second defeat that the Magyars have conceded in their last 17 games, dating back to September 2022. Their only other loss was against the Republic of Ireland in an international friendly earlier this month. A key to Hungary’s strength of late has been their improved attack, which has scored in each of their last ten games. Despite showing up as big underdogs, Hungary did beat this opponent 1-0 in their last meeting.
