Scotland will be looking to salvage some dignity in their next match against Switzerland on Wednesday after suffering their heaviest opening defeat in the history of the Men's European Championship.
Scotland:
Scotland’s heavy 5-1 defeat to hosts Germany in Munich to open the tournament has them playing catch-up. Their goal differential now means that they will almost certainly need a positive result in this match if they are to progress to the knockout stages. The Tartan Army has never made it out of the group stages in a major international tournament, coming up short on 11 occasions across the Euros and World Cup combined.
The good news for Steve Clarke’s men is that they are still very much alive in this tournament, as they weren’t expected to take any points against the Germans. The bad news is that Scotland come into this fixture having managed only a single victory over their last 10 games. That win came against minnows Gibraltar in a warm-up friendly just a few weeks prior to the start of the Euros.
Switzerland:
As for Switzerland, a 3-1 win over Hungary in the opening fixture has them sitting pretty heading into the second matchday. It was a professional performance from this experienced Swiss side that proves time and again they know how to navigate these tournaments. They now have a golden opportunity to seal what would be an impressive sixth consecutive qualification from the group stages across the Euros and World Cup since 2014.
The win over Hungary marked the third victory for Switzerland in their last four and extended their unbeaten run to five matches. In fact, the Red Crosses have been on a strong run since the end of the 2022 World Cup, losing only once in their last 15 games, winning seven and drawing seven.
Prediction: Scotland 0-2 Switzerland
