Lyon will travel to Roazhon Park to take on Rennes in their first Ligue 1 match of the 2024-25 season.
After competing for Champions League spots in recent seasons, Rennes saw their form dip in 2023-24, finishing 10th in Ligue 1—matching their lowest top-flight finish in a decade. Julien Stéphan, who took over in November, has led a major squad overhaul this summer, with Rennes recouping over £60m from player sales and investing around £40m in seven new signings.
Rennes, who won only three of their final 12 league games last season, will be eager to start the new campaign strongly, especially against Lyon, whom they defeated 3-2 away in January.
Lyon faced relegation fears midway through last season but turned things around dramatically under new coach Pierre Sage, accumulating the most points in Ligue 1 in 2024 (37) and finishing sixth to secure a Europa League spot. They have been active in the transfer market, signing eight players for nearly £100m, with Jake O'Brien’s notable departure to Everton for £16.4m.
Lyon's pre-season saw mixed results, with two wins, two losses, and one draw, including a recent 2-0 defeat to Arsenal. Despite losing four of their last six encounters with Rennes, Lyon won their last visit to Roazhon Park 1-0 in November.
Prediction: Rennes 1-2 Lyon
