AC Milan vs Rennes. Which one of these two teams will continue their UEFA Europa League campaign?
After crashing out of the Champions League’s group of death — finishing above Newcastle but below Dortmund and PSG — AC Milan now prepare for a tilt at the Europa League. Stefano Pioli’s men head into this first knockout clash in good form, too, having won three and drawn one of their last four matches, while they’ve tasted defeat just once since December 9.
As for Rennes, they finished second only to Villarreal in their Europa League group but with 12 points from six games, they were comfortably ahead of third-place Maccabi Haifa, who picked up just five points. The French side have won six and drawn two of their eight domestic matches since falling 3-2 to Villarreal in their final Europa League group match.
Not only have Rennes scored in all but one of their last 16 Europa League matches, but they also tend to travel well - a record of eight wins from 12 European away games speaks for itself.
Milan may have half an eye on Sunday's Serie A clash with neighbours Monza, so the tie could remain finely poised ahead of next week's return leg.
